Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
